Purple People Eater - Insane E 30 Build

Two brothers and their dream of drifting across America!

image name

Meet Doug and Dan Jakiela, two brothers with a crazy dream to drift all 50 states, and beyond. These two gentlemen just got into the sport of drifting 3 short years ago, and have already accomplished over 20% of their goal! They have also created a drifting event database, to help other drifters find and support events in their areas. The concept alone has garnered much curiousity, and the dream continues to grow daily. From fabrication and wrenching, to merchandise, marketing, websites, etc...these 2 guys do it all by themselves.

This article is more about the build of their sexy purple E30 BMW.
We have a short Q&A session, but then it's all about the car and the build!

Drift World - What got you into the sport of drifting, and when was that?

Dan - “I grew up always knowing I wanted to get into some level of racing or driving. When I was in college, I thought my plan was going to be racing in BMW SCCA, but realized the amount I would have to spend for a LOWER horsepower car (staying within SCCA rules and regulations) wasn’t something I wanted to do. Drifting was the opposite. You can get started cheaply, and build what you want, with as much power as you want! Obviously, its just awesome!”

DW - Explain your idea and concept with 50StatesofDrift?

Doug - “In 2017 Dan and I took to the road and began pursuing the dream of travelling the country drifting at as many places as possible. This was more difficult than we expected and our challenges opened us up to struggles experienced by both drivers and drift organizations within the community. One of the first challenges we faced was simply finding events that were a manageable distance for us and that fit into our schedules. What we have learned since then is that many grassroots organizations rely heavily on word-of-mouth marketing to attract new drivers to their events, which unfortunately makes it much more difficult for new drivers to get involved and find local events without knowing the right contacts. The second challenge we saw (this time relating to the grassroots drifting community) was a struggle faced by many of the drift event organizations. Many people seem to forget that track rentals, track insurance, and event staffing, etc. all come at a cost. Without enough drivers in attendance, these organizations struggle to financially make ends meet. This results in organizations being able to afford fewer events and, in some cases, results in organizations shutting down permanently. My brother and I wanted to help. Our solution was what led us to the creation of www.50StatesofDrift.com. Over the 3 years I've made the nationwide events list more sand more organizations have reached out and sent their events, which allows us to find events that I may have missed in years passed (also saves me time because its all done by hand)”

DW - How many states have you guys already drifted in?

Doug - 13 so far!

DW - What was your favorite track to drive so far, and why?

Dan - “Kilkare Raceway in Xenia Ohio. Its only a few hours away, the track is in great shape, the guys at Drift Indy run a super hot track with new layouts all the time, and its just a larger faster track which makes things more fun!”

DW - What track are you really looking forward to driving in the future, and why?

Dan - “Gingerman Raceway in Michigan for Gridlife Midwest. The track is pretty legendary in general, but driving next to the best drifters in the world at at a spectacle like this has us pumped”

DW - What was your first drift car? How many have you guys had and built?

Doug - “The first car is actually one of our current cars. Our E30 started as a bone stock shell in 2016. We have repainted it 4 times, had 4 different body kits, 2 engines (both RB25det neo) and have pretty much a full built E30 now, but it all started with the original shell.”

DW - Whats your craziest road trip story?

Doug - “Our trip to OSW Black Friday Drift at Orlando Speedway in November of 2018. We left Dans place in Upstate NY at about 6am the first travel day and were headed to Philadelphia (to pick up our Dad). We knew there was snow in the forecast for NY, but assumed that when we got far enough south it would be rain. Anyways, when we arrived in Philly it had already started snowing and only became more fun from there. When we got to VA we were in a blizzard. Our 3500 dually and our previous 34ft racing trailer were driving past cars and trucks crashed into barriers, spun out, crashed down hills, and we saw over 50 of them in that 4-5 hour period. Thankfully Dan kept us safe and on our way to OSW, but thanks to the snow it went from a 19 hour drive to about 28 hours.”

DW - Any advice for up and coming drivers out there?

Dan - “Don’t take short cuts with critical parts of your build (roll care, seat, harness, helmet, cooling system, etc.), bring spares (of everything lol”, and don’t build a car you’re afraid to break or crash drifting (they are both going to happen)!”

DW - Tell us about your wonderful sponsors!

Doug - “Since Dan got into drifting, I knew he was going build something awesome because he’s built a bunch of awesome Audi’s and a couple of cool old school BMWs. Once he got into his second year driving, I was curious after seeing guys at previous events who had sponsors. Coming from a business background, I did some research on how we can provide value to potential sponsors and pitch them on possible partnerships. For us its been our Instagram, Facebook, our website (and how our website is made for and used by people with a consistent interest), and the fully custom nature of the E30 with Dans madness behind the wheel. However, I’ve reached out to 350+ companies over the last 2.5 years and we are truly blessed to work with our 16 current partners!”

DW - Tell us about this awesome E30 build, lets get into all the sexy details!

Dan - “Long story short, we built it from the ground up. To be completely honest though, our E30 was just meant to be a starter car with little extra flare (an RB swap). In 2017 it was just that… but then in 2018 I made my own widebody kit and started down the rabbit hole of upgrades. At the end of 2018, we had built up a solid backing of sponsors and made a goal to hit our first pro-am in 2019. Our goal along with several new sponsors really helped us take the E30 to the next level including the suspension, cooling system, brake set up, wheels, tires, ECU etc. Fast forward to now- My brother found a guy in Sweden who had this custom nasty e30 widebody and was going to make a few sets (I think he made 7) for sale. When we found out we were going be able to buy one, we decided to shift our focus back to the E30 as our competition car (our boosted V8 E46 M3 was originally the plan for 2020). Funny how its happened. Here we are now 5 years later with a pro spec E30 that was supposed to be the starter car.”
